The Countdown to RWBY Volume 6: Theories, Questions, and Expectations

Well, it's less than one week until RWBY Volume 6 premieres this Saturday on Rooster Teeth First (Or less if you bought a ticket to the RWBY Volume 6 Premiere by Fathom Events). With that, here are my questions, theories, and expectations for this volume.

Questions to be Answered:

What is the state of Blake and Yang’s relationship?

At the end of Volume 5, a key story arc that was left unresolved was the broken relationship between Blake and Yang. After Yang lost her arm in the Battle of Beacon, Blake abandoned her and spent volumes four and five confronting her cowardice. At the end of volume 5, the members of Team RWBY finally reunited, but with no time address Blake and Yang’s friendship beyond the group hug. With Yang’s mother, Raven, once again abandoning her, Blake’s return could be viewed as a good thing for Yang. However, we will have to see where their broken bond will take us, and hopefully, it can be restored. Original source: (https://ap2hyc.com/2018/03/6-questions-want-answered-rwby-volume-6/)

Why are Weiss and Yang angry at Oscar/Ozpin? Why does Blake looked shocked in this scene? Why is Ruby the only one who is worried about Oscar/Ozpin?

This scene from the trailer really grabbed my attention. There is a lot to take in here and a lot of questions to be answered. Clearly this scene has some significance to it. Yang and Weiss are clearly not happy with Oscar/Ozpin, who seems to begging for forgiveness. Blake has a surprised look on her face and stopped midway from grabbing Gambol Shroud. Finally, Ruby is the only person who is showing some concern for Oscar/Ozpin. This is one question to keep in mind when we finally arrive at this scene in Volume 6.

Who is “Maz”?

This is one of the big questions regarding our favorite mysterious elderly woman, "Maz." Who is she and why does she wear those high-tech goggles? She has been the subject of theories across the RWBY fanbase. YouTuber Calxiyn has some theories regarding these questions. "Maz" is the winter maiden; "Maz" has silver eyes, like Ruby and Summer Rose, Ruby's mother, and wears the goggles to suppress and hide her powers. This question regarding the true identity of "Maz" and why she wears those goggles will certainly be answered once this character is introduced.

Is Cinder still alive?

In my opinion, it is pretty clear that the shadowy figure from the Volume 6 poster is Cinder. Many fans, myself included, thought she died after Raven threw her into the abyss at the end of Volume 5. But, when you think about it, there's a lot more about Cinder that we still don't know. What is her backstory? What are her motivations? What is her endgame? Why did she team up with Salem? There is still a lot left on the table for Cinder in terms of her character development.

What’s going on with Oscar and Ozpin?

If you look at where Oscar and Professor Ozpin are positioned in the poster, they are in the center. Along with the fact that the eyes of Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are all focused on them, Oscar and Ozpin are one of the major focal points of this volume. That being said, the trailer showed us two eye-catching moments involving Oscar/Ozpin. The aforementioned scene from above and the part where he shouts "No." It looks like there could be some internal struggle for between Oscar and Ozpin for complete control. If so, one of the new themes that the writers and cast alluded to during the panel at New York Comic Con could be mental health related. This question is definitely one to keep in mind as the volume progresses towards these two scenes.

Expectations:

Finally, here are my expectations for Volume 6. I would like to see further character development for Adam and Oscar/Ozpin. The most important expectation for me is that the state of Blake and Yang's relationship is addressed. On another Blake and Yang related note, I would like to Blake and Yang team up against Adam. While chatting with cosplayer Hope Allyn, weirdohope, on one of her posts regarding her excitement for Volume 6, she mentioned that she would like to see Blake and Yang team up against Adam, to which I commented that I was also looking forward to the same thing (Hope Allyn on Instagram: AHHH 2 weeks until RWBY Volume 6! I’m so excited for this season you guys it’s insane 😱 is there anything you’re looking forward to seeing). Finally, I really would like Weiss to get some payback at her father for what he did during Volume 4.
